Ecstatic Dance

We at Rhythm Sanctuary Kohala host a weekly freestyle movement dance led by DJ’s from around the island and abroad. Following the classic Ecstatic dance model of a dance wave, our music mixes many genres such as worldwide, electronic, afro-beat, house, bass, jazz, etc.  Started in January of 2025, we are growing in popularity and love visitors!  If you find yourself on the north end of the Big Island on a weekend, think of dropping by. At present we do not host an opening circle but do hold a closing circle at the end.  The space is partially inside with a dance floor and partially outside on the lawn where you can feel the cool North Kohala trade winds. Kieki often play on the lawn with our bubble machines as parents and family dance inside or out. Sets are about and hour and forty-five minutes long and music starts promptly at 10:00. If you are new to ecstatic dance, come at 10:00 and we can give you a brief introduction to the dance floor.

We operate by suggested donation (as we are a non-profit project of the North Kohala Community Resource Center) – $12-$20 (a $20 donation puts $5 in the DJ tip jar)

All the information about Rhythm Sanctuary Kohala is available on our website, www.rhythmsanctuaryhi.com, as well as details about our upcoming music facilitator. We host a community Potluck following dance and offer hot cacao during dance the first weekend the month. (See website for confirmation of upcoming activities)

Dance Guidelines

GUIDELINES

  • Conversations outside (off the dance floor)

  • Electronic-free dance floor (No cell phones or photo taking)

  • Bare or sock feet on the dance floor (unless shoes are needed for medical reasons)

  • Sober event

  • Fragrance-free

  • Be aware and respect the space of fellow dancers

  • Obtain clear consent each time before making physical contact with another

KEIKI GUIDELINES

We welcome Keiki as part of our dancing Ohana! We get it: the music and energy on the dance floor can get them excited — it excites us adults, too!

  • We just ask the adults accompanying the keiki to kindly follow these guidelines to keep Rhythm Sanctuary Kohala a safe dance space for all:

  • Keiki (under the age of 10) must be under the constant watchful eye of their guardian(s) regardless of where they are dancing. This is for safety reasons for other adults and for the keikis.

  • We are fortunate to have a beautiful outside dancing space. Keiki may dance most freely outside on the lawn where they can run and vocalize as they want.

  • Keiki and their guardian(s) are encouraged to dance in the side room (to the left of the DJ area) when they are inside the Barn.  In the side room, dancing needs to be quiet without rough-housing, swinging or running for example.

We appreciate your cooperation!

Thank you, the Rhythm Sanctuary Kohala Coordinators (Lori and Gab)
