Dance Guidelines
Ecstatic dance is a form of freeform dance where participants move freely without following specific steps or patterns, allowing them to express their emotions, connect with their inner selves, and explore their bodies’ natural movements. Typically, there is no talking during the dance, and participants are encouraged to let go of inhibitions and self-consciousness, allowing the music to guide their movements. The environment is often non-judgmental and supportive, fostering a sense of community and shared experience.
This practice can be seen as both a form of meditation and physical exercise, offering benefits such as stress relief, increased mindfulness, and enhanced emotional well-being. Ecstatic dance sessions often start with a warm-up, progress into more energetic rhythms, and end with calming music, creating a holistic journey that mirrors natural human emotional cycles. The experience can be deeply personal, providing a space for individuals to process emotions and connect with others on a non-verbal, energetic level.
Ecstatic Dance – 3 Simple Guidelines
1. We Dance without shoes (or: We Dance Barefoot)
This allows us to connect more fully with the Ground (socks are OK)
If you have a physical condition that you need dance shoes, then OK
2. We Dance without words (or: We Dance with Body Language)
This makes it easier to be in a Meditative State
No Verbal Instruction from the Facilitators
No Talking from the Dancers
3. We Dance as We Are
No Drugs/Alcohol, No Phones, No Camera/Video, No Scents, No Expectations, No Judgements, No Shoulds, No Oughts… Just Be Yourself; With Respect for Ourselves, the Space, and One Another.
