Ecstatic Dance
Kulchajam was the venue for Byron Bay’s first ecstatic dance event hosted by Becca Dakini many eons ago.
In early 2020 we felt a strong desire to rekindle the ecstatic dance community in the shire. We needed a place to dance deep and pure, and also wanted to create a venue for djs to play and be paid despite number restrictions in these strange cv times.
DJs without borders Ecstatic Dance Byron Bay was born as an offering of a weekly deep dive into movement and intuitive expression.
Our intention is to provide an open, safe and clear space for our community to explore the magical instrument of the body.
Dance is our medicine.
We believe in the purity of music and movement as a container to to transform, shift and uplift.
For this reason:
** we keep it pure and simple – no additional ‘enhancements’
** we set the dance floor as ceremonial space – opening with an acknowledgement of Country, intention and exploratory exercise and closing with sweet acoustic serenades
* we ensure epic sound -high quality PA and subwoofer to enable an immersive sonic experience
We hold to the basic principles of ecstatic dance here((https://ecstaticdance.org/about/))
We dance barefoot
We dance without words
We dance as we are
Giving back
We honour Country on which we dance, acknowledge and pay our respect to the Tradition Owners and First Peoples of this land.
We will be giving a portion of the profits from each event to support Indigenous causes – with respect to the land on which we shake a leg
Let us know what you love
All respectful beings are welcome on the dancefloor!
We are an inclusive community and like to keep it fresh and open to exploration. We believe that diversity brings flavor and movement- inviting DJS from all around the world, all ages and genders, well-established and well-known DJs as well as DJs that have a fresh and new spark
We are listening to the community and constantly evolving and growing so we can serve the community in the best way.

Dance Guidelines
Ecstatic Dance – 3 Simple Guidelines
1. We Dance without shoes (or: We Dance Barefoot)
This allows us to connect more fully with the Ground (socks are OK)
If you have a physical condition that you need dance shoes, then OK
2. We Dance without words (or: We Dance with Body Language)
This makes it easier to be in a Meditative State
No Verbal Instruction from the Facilitators
No Talking from the Dancers
3. We Dance as We Are
No Drugs/Alcohol, No Phones, No Camera/Video, No Scents, No Expectations, No Judgements, No Shoulds, No Oughts… Just Be Yourself; With Respect for Ourselves, the Space, and One Another.
